Radioactive Dragon Eyes Zoanthids: An Iconic Classic for Your Reef

Light up your saltwater aquarium with the legendary Radioactive Dragon Eyes Zoanthids. This classic and instantly recognizable zoa morph is a staple in reef tanks worldwide, beloved for its dazzling, high-contrast coloration and reliable, fast-growing nature. Each polyp features a brilliant, neon-lime green center that appears to glow under actinic lighting, surrounded by a bright orange to fire-red mouth that radiates outward. The outer ring is a deep, rich green with delicate contrasting stripes, creating a mesmerizing "dragon eye" pattern that draws the eye from across the room. Under blue-spectrum lighting, the fluorescence of this morph becomes nothing short of spectacular, making it a must-have for any zoa enthusiast.

Aquacultured & Captive-Bred for Hardiness
This frag is 100% aquacultured, meaning it has been propagated and raised entirely in a controlled captive environment. This process results in corals that are significantly hardier, more disease-resistant, and better adapted to the conditions of home reef aquariums than wild-collected specimens. You will receive a healthy, established frag with multiple polyps, securely attached to a frag plug. Each frag typically measures ¾ to 1 inch in diameter and is ready for introduction to your system.

Exceptionally Beginner-Friendly
Radioactive Dragon Eyes are widely regarded as one of the easiest and most forgiving zoanthids available, making them an ideal choice for beginners setting up their first reef tank. They are also a reliable favorite among seasoned hobbyists who appreciate their resilience and rapid growth. These zoas tolerate a wide range of water conditions, recover quickly from minor fluctuations, and will thrive with minimal intervention, providing instant color and movement to any aquascape.

Lighting & Flow

  • Lighting: Thrives under a wide variety of lighting conditions, from low to moderate intensity (T5, LED, or metal halide). For optimal growth and color expression, an ideal PAR range of 75–150 is recommended. While they adapt well to different light levels, they display their most intense neon fluorescence under blue and actinic spectrums.

  • Water Flow: Prefers low to moderate, indirect water flow. A gentle, intermittent current will keep the polyps clean of detritus and promote full, healthy extension. Avoid direct, high-velocity flow that may cause the polyps to retract or become stressed.

Placement & Growth

  • Placement: Best placed in the lower to middle zones of your aquascape. While peaceful towards other corals, Radioactive Dragon Eyes are known for their vigorous growth and can spread quickly, potentially overtaking slower-growing neighbors. Provide them with ample space, or consider placing them on an isolated "zoa island" to easily manage their colony expansion and prevent them from dominating your rockwork.

  • Growth Rate: This is a fast-growing zoa that will reward you with new polyps on a regular basis under optimal conditions. With stable parameters and occasional feeding, a small frag will rapidly develop into a dense, carpeting colony that adds vibrant color and texture to your reef.

Feeding & Nutrition
While Radioactive Dragon Eyes derive a significant portion of their energy from photosynthesis through their symbiotic zooxanthellae, they will benefit greatly from supplemental feeding. Target feeding with fine particulate foods such as reef roids, marine snow, phytoplankton, or liquid amino acids once or twice per week will encourage faster growth, larger polyp expansion, and even more intense coloration.

Recommended Water Parameters

  • Temperature: 72–78°F

  • Salinity: 1.023–1.026

  • pH: 8.1–8.4

  • Alkalinity: 8–12 dKH

  • Nitrate: 1–10 ppm

  • Phosphate: 0.02–0.10 ppm

Important Handling Note: Always wear gloves and eye protection when handling Zoanthids and Palythoa, as some species can contain a potent toxin (palytoxin) that is harmful to humans and pets.
